  • I’ll just be honest, from my perspective on lemmy everything outside of porn, linux and shitposts is lacking. Interaction outside the top of hot is a wasteland of non-existence, questions go undiscovered, comments are never read. We could all be more generous with upvotes to improve visibility.

For me sfw art communities, sports, and life protips would all be nice to see grow. I miss the old photoshopbattles too, but I think that’s just fallen out of style in general.

  • I was admittedly being a bit of a smartass, I don’t actually think jellyfin is doing anything particularly special.

It’s free, it’s open source, it doesn’t try to upsell me or show me ads, it’s fast, it has personalized user accounts, it organizes and presents media beautifully and plays it flawlessly on whatever device I choose to use. For me, idk what more I could ask for from a media server.

EDIT: looking at Emby premier, seems $ provides hardware transcoding, native apps, downloading media for offline, cover arts, database backup, I guess this is stuff I take for granted. Jellyfin just includes it. If jellyfin couldn’t do transcoding or native app playback OOTB I don’t think I’d use it.

Edit2: for context I moved from kodi to jellyfin just a couple years ago, I wasn’t aware of it’s FOSS-fork relationship to Emby before now.

  • Fair enough, cutting out housing and food expenses would definitely go a long way, that’s easily the majority of my personal post-tax costs.

I’m glad those opportunities were available for you to get on your feet and built a cushion. My parents booted me out with 70k in student debt, though it’s been a decade and I’ve dug myself out of it and built a life, it still feels like there’s no escaping the treadmill.

  • How in the actual hell do you save 60% of your take home? Do you have an exceptionally well paying job? Single and living a ramen noodles and tent lifestyle? Would love to hear more because I can’t even fathom how an average person could achieve this level of saving. I struggle with saving just 20% after all the bills are paid, and I consider myself frugal. Sure I have a Netflix subscription, but I don’t go on vacations or carry a car note, my wardrobe is fruit of the loom package teeshirts and simple jeans, my PC is from 2016… What’s your secret?
