Anything that makes housing affordable would also remove a significant amount of wealth from the elderly, who outvote and (I think) out donate other demographic groups.

Pretty hard thing to do politically.

I dunno, I think especially in older generations, the earnest conversation is something to be avoided at all costs. For my dad, that’s just how he was raised and I think his worst nightmare would be talking about feelings or something.

So take that and then put a hobby/passion that clearly means a lot to your folks and yeah, those can really combine in unfortunate ways.

Personally, when we’re not talking politics (my parents’ version of sports) I will sometimes throw more serious or interesting questions at mom (as said, dad hates that so I don’t push) and sometimes get interesting answers. It’s effort and mostly a one way street but I try to remember they’re not from a super healthy emotional era and even if they might at times be open to it, it does not come naturally to them (or me if I’m being honest.)

Forgot a lighter which has so far led to 2 weddings and 5 kids?

In the first week of school, a buddy and I wandered around with beer and joints to various dorms but forgot a lighter. Asking around for one, we made a new friend. Fast forward a couple years, “new friend” let me know about a home for rent opening up. I rounded up some folks (including original buddy) and we rented it. Except one guy was gone for the summer. So, a gal came from out of town to live with there. We became friends, she fell in love and ended up moving here. Between her, her best friend and sister they’ve had 5 kids with partners mostly from that original friend circle.

So, if I had remembered a lighter way back in first year, we wouldn’t have put a house of folks together, wouldn’t have met gal and her pals and thus a few weddings and kids would’ve happened differently or not at all.

I’m not young but I still missed out!

There are a lot of great paying shitty jobs. Working on pipelines, any remote construction etc.

It’s a mystery! I’ll never understand why the week after yet another price hike, I quit because of the price hike. I guess I just act randomly in response to price hikes.

A few things happened pretty quickly.

During the pandemic, tech profits soared which led to massive hiring sprees. For all the press about layoffs at the big guys, I think most still have more workers than they did pre-pandemic.

Interests rates soared. Before the pandemic interest rates were ludicrously low, in other words it cost almost nothing to borrow money. This made it easier to spend on long term or unclear projects where the hope seemed to be “get enough users, then you can monetize.” Once interest rates rose, those became incredibly expensive projects, so funding is now much more scarce. Companies are pulling back on bigger projects or, like reddit, trying to monetize them faster. Startups are also finding it harder, so fewer jobs.

And of course, AI. No one is quite sure how much that’ll change the game but some folks think most programmers will be replaceable, or at least 1 programmer will be able to do the work of several. So, rather than hire and go through everything severance etc might entail, I think a lot of companies are taking a wait and see approach and thus not hiring.

Ahaha, dang I got so excited before google pointed out I’m an idiot and meant season 4. (But on the other hand, did find out it was renewed for a 4th, so that’s groovy!)

I think of it like those people are subsidizing my free content.

Like everyone else says, depends what you want.

If you can afford it, Vancouver is amazing (though, I am a biased Vancouverite.) In a good season, there are local ski mountains about 30 or 40 minutes from downtown, Whistler is a couple hours away. There’s awesome food all over the place, the underground scene is a blast and even some of the licensed etc venues can be pretty awesome. In the summer, everyone wants to be outside and if you’re into sporty stuff, there’s a boatload to do. The weather is generally pretty mild (though climate change is messing with that.)

The transit system can be amazing, depending on where you live. (In the suburbs, like most other cities, it’s kind of trash.) But there are trains, rapid busses etc if you live near any hub. And of course, bike paths galore!

One asterix to this, if you buy wrapping paper for “cheaper” at a dollar store, you are likely paying much more per square foot. So if you have space to store it and intend to wrap things again, probably worth it to buy a proper roll.

The Boys, Expanse, Invincible, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, Fleabag, Good Omens, Man in the High Tower and Reached come to mind. Admittedly, I haven’t watched a few of those.

I don’t have access to their data but my guesses are something like:

A) Money isn’t an issue for a large number of subscribers.

B) People like those specific models after stumbling onto them on reddit or whatnot. And while there are many other attractive women, the Onlyfans model is the one they like best.

C) Similar to gonewild, there’s an allure to someone ostensibly being an amateur rather than a pornstar.

D) Laziness. I imagine onlyfans really took off during the pandemic. For those who don’t really look at their credit card bills, I doubt there are other reminders.

The whole point about federation is you are welcome to find another instance that shares this view!

Personally, I don’t want to stumble onto CSAM or racist shit and have to block those instances myself. (It’s exhausting enough blocking the hentai and furry communities as it is!)

Prices are sticky but the rate of inflation slows. Hopefully at least. You don’t want to slow spending down so much so as to cause a recession, it’s a fine balance.

Given how long term an issue like inflation is, trying to tame it is a relatively new experience/adventure for humanity.
