That’s the first book I ever encountered with an ending that made me angry.

That’s the first book I ever encountered with an ending that made me angry.
i wonder how much of the Empathy for Cute Animals but Not Humans effect is due to not many people having bad experiences with cute animals but plenty of bad experiences with humans
I, however, have the unique privilege of having had a sister who owned a deranged rabbit that she let roam the house. I once woke up from a nap to it biting me hard enough to draw blood. That thing was a furry asshole.
What little unrepressed memories of Watership Down I have seem to corroborate that rabbits are surprisingly violent…
I’m mildly fascinated by diprosopus and found ye olde depictione of it on the wikipedia page
couldn’t you argue that’s the meddling sun and not the computer
oh god i’m so sorry guys i would have tried to tidy up a little if i knew you were coming over
11/10
i’d bet it’s entirely possible Samos can yell loud enough to knock an eyeball askew
my body
A brown bear and polar bear case the joint from across the street, taking notes. Their black bear accomplice rejoins them with a gummy grin. “These idiots are a good mark. They don’t know to fight back!”
Is knowledge better if it serves a purpose, like improving your art?
In my opinion knowledge that serves a purpose (improved art, medical science, applied engineering, take your pick) is better than “trivial” knowledge, but even trivia has purpose (it can entertain and inspire) and sometimes converts from trivia to “useful” knowledge when combined with new science and tech. A good example is pure math, here’s a stackechange thread about mathematics areas that were found to have applications well after their discovery, by mostly mathematicians doing math for the sake of math.
Should art serve a purpose? Is beautiful enough, or should it be useful?
If you mean its physical form has a function other than to be perceived by humans for entertainment and inspiration, then sure, why not? But maybe not always. :) Also of note, not all art is necessarily beautiful. I would say a fair bit of “useful” or otherwise multipurpose art is quite ugly. Shock films, muckraking journalism, and hostile architecture come to mind as examples.
I’ve always felt that life’s purpose should be pursuit of knowledge and self expression in roughly equal proportions. So 50% science, 50% art. That’s just what feels right in my brain, I guess.
I think most brains are just going to have their own idea of what life’s purpose should be and most of them will be more or less fine. A majority will have said purposes stifled by the limitations of society and biology, though
be safe and well! :)
Seems you’re right, I had it backwards
You know what I always saw them in “related products” banners and assumed they’d be the opposite of what I wanted (compression socks) but I’ll have to give them a search. Cheaper would certainly be nicer haha
no-timeline-breaking mode: Buster Brown 100% cotton socks. they lack elastic and the mental relief I get from not having my ankle nerves ping my brain all day with “SLIGHT PRESSURE! HEY! HEY!!! JUST A REMINDER THAT YOU’RE WEARING SOOOOOOOCKS” is emancipating.
timeline breaking mode: detailed instructions on getting rich with crypto, majoring in computer science instead of biochem, and oh by the way you’re clinically depressed, gay, and a communist just do your best to fast-track self acceptance GOOD LUCK LOL
mental health, physical health, i don’t even need a third thing those two would likely fix all my problems…
If you don’t already, a good thing to own is a road atlas of your country.
I also have been wanting an astronomical almanac that would have info like sunrise/sunset times (got that idea from I Am Legend), and various other sky stuff data I don’t know how to use for timekeeping and navigation but would like to learn :] My lack of expertise (ok, maybe also motivation) has prevented me from finding one.
There used to be agricultural almanacs also, with recommended planting dates. I looked into the extant USA ones (Old Farmer’s and Farmer’s) but they seem to have devolved into something more like annual rustic-themed magazines with barely any useful info… :[
I own this one, as well as Dartnell’s The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Our World from Scratch because I am a massive tech history nerd. (I’d love the idea of being able to survive a collapse but I’m too self-aware of my insufficient physical fitness for that, lol.)
Also for those who’ve not heard of the BBC series Connections, it’s AWESOME. More useful for entertainment than as a reference, but the first episode literally explores the question “what would a single human have to do to survive if modern life suddenly became unavailable?” Here are all the episodes on Archive.org.
I use it in my 50cc motor scooter since it’s got a barely 1 gallon tank that lasts me ~2 weeks a fill, so the price difference is negligible
I figured the higher octane would make a noticeable difference since it’s such a small engine
But reading this thread I’m now thinking maybe I shouldn’t do this?
