  • The slave system would be senseless, stupid and unnatural under modern conditions. But under the conditions of a disintegrating primitive communal system, the slave system is a quite understandable

What bullcrap! Slavery exists today. It’s still repugnant even though it “makes sense” to those that benefit from it.

The Mongols rampaging across Asia and offering the false choice of slavery or anhilation to all the people they encountered was evil then and it’s evil today. Distancing yourself from it doesn’t change the evaluation.

  • The most difficult part is to keep track of the big picture because it is so verbose. Otherwise it’s a handful or two of instructions you use 90+% of the time.

It’s a long time since I wrote any assembly in anger, but I don’t remember this being an issue. Back then Id be writing 2D and 3D graphics demos. Reasonably complex things, but the challenge was always getting it fast enought to keep the frame rate up, not code structure.

As you say, I think you just establish patterns to decompose the problem.

If you like the character-plqy of GoT and don’t mind a smaller story (i.e. a single conflict rather than a world at war) then I think House of the Dragon is great. I know some are finding the pacing slow, but I’m really enjoying all the 2 or 3 character scenes where it’s all about the dialogue.

Edit: another I’ve not seen in the thread is “The Great”, which styles itself as “A sometimes true story”. A comedy drama based on Katherine the Great’s rise to power in 18th Century Russia - Huzzah! Written by the same writer that did the oscar winning “The Favourite”.
