  • The best I’ve got is, it’s complicated. I left reddit very purposely to avoid a lot of the corp side BS and the results of that on the user base. The number of bots and bought/paid accounts alone is enough of a reason not to go back. It’s been getting pretty steadily worse for the last decade at least and while I think the fediverse is kind of toxic, I know for a fact from first hand experience that reddit is more so by a large margin. I want Lemmy to have more users and more communities. I miss reddit for the sheer number of niche communities that haven’t moved over. I don’t have time to start and moderate a community myself. But I don’t want reddit here. I welcome users who want to follow the rules. I don’t welcome wholesale reddit occupation of this space.

  • The thing is, if I want something I’ll go looking for it. At the point where I’m looking for it or something like it, I am happy to consume ads even tangentially related to that thing. If analytics marketing worked this way (showing me relevant ads when I’m shopping for something, even if it’s for something I am not actively looking for), things would be better. But ads have worked their way into the cracks of everything and that’s my problem with them.

I hate Billboards. I don’t like circulars (waste of paper and generally too much trash), I hate junk mail and I think it’s predatory. Popups (singing, flashing, scrolling when I scroll to stay on the page, tiny exit buttons, video, etc) are garbage.

  • Shave gel. Some soaps. Some said Old Baby Bay seasoning and I am 100% behind them on that. Toilet paper. Menstrual pads. Ritz crackers (the consistency, the flavour, the texture/mouth feel). Certain electronics. Definitely tools (I’ve broken so many pairs of diagonal side cutters and the ones that have held up the best and had the best warranty are knipex). And yeah. I buy Advil (the candy coating makes it easier for me to swallow dry and I’m pretty prone to need it for lots of pains because I’m basically a walking talking broken vessel).

  • The things I miss from Reddit are mostly very niche. I left and haven’t been back mostly because I refuse to use their BS app, and I refuse to see ads. I was a mobile Reddit user so I didn’t use it on the computer much.

I do miss doing gaming giveaways of extra stuff for like animal crossing and so on. And I miss helping newbies with games (mostly retro gaming stuff). Other than that Reddit was a time sink for me and I have other places to use my time.

I don’t get FOMO. I mostly miss interacting with other people. Talking about opinions. Finding people who agree with me about niche stuff. People don’t seem to interact as much here and I don’t think that’s because of the lack of content.

But I don’t see the point of going back to Reddit. The experience of trawling through the muck to get to a few grains of what I want just doesn’t appeal to me. All reports I’ve seen suggest that it’s just getting worse and I was struggling with the experience before the API debacle.
